W.Y.W. (What You Will) is a full-length adaptation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night that I wrote and directed as part of my undergraduate thesis project in 2018. My thesis project examined resistance strategies to the comedy’s formal structure of moving from gendered disorder to heterosexual resolution. The tactic I tried in this piece was to use Getrude Stein’s circular dramaturgy to make the play move in circles, rather than toward its conclusion. The play was performed by an all-trans cast, who sat in a circle around a rug facing one another.
